Our position#
Manga and comics exist because creators, editors, translators and publishers get paid. Piracy takes that away from them. We built Bokumi to make legitimate reading better, not to make unlicensed reading easier.
What Bokumi does and does not do#
- Bokumi is a reader application, like a web browser, an e-book app or a photo viewer. It shows pages that you open.
- Bokumi does not host, store, cache, upload, transmit, distribute or link to any manga, comics or books, on its servers or anywhere else. It has no servers that hold or pass on content.
- Bokumi does not run, curate, rank or recommend any catalog, repository, extension, source or website.
- Bokumi ships with no content and no connections to any content provider.
- When someone reads with Bokumi, their own device opens their own files or connects directly to a place they chose. We are not part of that connection, we don't see it, and we have no way to change or remove what it carries.
- Bokumi collects no data, so we don't know what anyone reads with it.
What you may open with Bokumi#
Only content that you own, are licensed or authorized to read, that is in the public domain, or that its rights holder has made free to read in this way. The full rule, and what it forbids, is in the terms of use.
Good places to find something to read: your local bookshop, the publisher's own store and app, official digital stores, your public library (many lend comics and manga digitally), the first chapters and series that creators and publishers share for free, and the large and lovely world of public-domain comics and prints. If you bring files into Bokumi, the bring your own books guide shows how.
If you are a rights holder#
Because Bokumi hosts nothing, we cannot take content down from third-party sites, and a notice to us will not remove it from them. Send it to whoever hosts the material. If you believe something in our app or on our website infringes your rights, or that Bokumi's name or materials are being used to distribute infringing content, we want to hear it.
Email copyright@bokumi.app with:
- your name, your company, and how to reach you;
- a description of the copyrighted work you say is infringed, and, where you can, where it is;
- where the allegedly infringing material is, with enough detail for us to find it (a link, or a description of what you saw in the App);
- a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by you, your agent or the law;
- a statement, made under penalty of perjury, that the information is accurate and that you are the rights holder or authorized to act for them; and
- your physical or electronic signature.
We review notices promptly. Where we find a violation on our side, we remove or disable the material, and in appropriate circumstances we end the license of anyone who repeatedly infringes.
If you think we got it wrong#
If material was removed in error, tell us at the same address with the details and a statement, made under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief it was a mistake. We will review it.
Reporting misuse#
If you know of a service that uses Bokumi's name to offer unlicensed content, or that presents itself as endorsed by us, write to copyright@bokumi.app. We have not endorsed any, and we will say so.
